“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” topped the box office for the last weekend before the release of “Avatar: Way of the Water,” bringing its domestic total over $401 million Friday.
The weekend was quiet across all titles however, bringing in an estimated $38 million over three days for one of the slowest weekends of the year.
Even with “Avatar” likely to overtake the box office next weekend, “Black Panther” is expected to surpass the $411 million earned by “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”
Second place at the domestic box office went to holiday action film “Violent Night” while Disneys animated adventure “Strange World” took third.
In addition to “Avatar,” festival favorite “The Whale” starring Brendan Fraser will open this weekend, but only at six locations.
